PANLAR Women
Women are significantly underrepresented in academic recognition and leadership roles in the field of rheumatology. In addition, women rheumatologists face unique challenges, such as motherhood, breastfeeding, harassment, and a perceived lack of authority and leadership. A recent PANLAR study showed that in the Pan-American region, more than 50% of women rheumatologists are involved in teaching and research activities despite the barriers posed by family roles, and the cultural perceptions of patients, employers, health care workers, teachers and union leaders.
The “PANLAR Women” study group is created to address the inequalities and systemic barriers faced by women in the practice of rheumatology, to promote gender equity and to create an inclusive environment that fosters the growth and excellence of women in this specialty.
This study group is open to the participation of women and men PANLAR members who are interested in the study of gender equity.
