Diagnostic approach to the patient with joint pain

1 Febrero 2022

Course organized by the Pan American League of Rheumatology Associations PANLAR. It is aimed at general practitioners, specialists in internal medicine, family medicine, pain and palliative care, physical medicine and rehabilitation, among other specialties that are interested in patients with joint pain.

The idea of carrying out this course was born given the limited availability of human resources in rheumatology in Latin America, with only one rheumatologist for every 106,838 inhabitants, which was documented in a recent publication led by PANLAR. Given the small number of rheumatologists in the region, it is necessary that internists and other specialties involved in the initial clinical approach to the patient with joint pain, have a better knowledge about the subject, and have tools that allow them to address the patient with joint pain.

In this sense, at PANLAR we have worked on the design of an algorithm that will allow the doctor to have a clearer approach to patients with joint pain and suspicion of rheumatic disease, an algorithm that was tested in a clinical experiment, in which it was shown When used by primary care physicians, it significantly improves the proportion of correct diagnoses, and causes fewer laboratory tests to be requested, thus optimizing the approach to patients with joint pain.
